Ranked as the busiest airport in the world,  Atlanta International transported 106 million passengers and handled 808,000 flights in 2025.
Total global air passengers in 2025 were estimated to be 9.8 billion. However, large inequalities mean that most of the world’s population do not fly at all.
35% of international trade by value (less than 1% by weight) is also carried by air, with a total estimated value of $8 trillion.
Global aviation – including both passengers and freight – currently emits an estimated one billion tonnes of CO2 per annum. Planes also affect the concentration of other gases and pollutants in the atmosphere, resulting in a stronger warming effect overall.
