Whilst studying in Norwich in 2005 I arranged an ‘action’
at the (then) new Chapelfields shopping centre in order to raise awareness of Buy Nothing Day
( in November) and therefore to encourage people to
think twice about their need to buy. I
and fellow students handed out brown paper carrier bags (made
from recycled paper which I had designed and screen-printed
by hand), which contained a card with
information and stickers for people’s wallets or credit
cards.
We had a lot of fun and started lots of interesting conversations.
Ironically, Buy Nothing Day now coincides with the aptly named Black Friday pre-Christmas shopping bonanza.
