The Husab Mine is one of the largest open-pit mines in Africa and is the largest uranium mine in the world. It is estimated to contain approximately 280 million tonnes of uranium ore.
In 2020, Namibia produced 11% of the world’s uranium, making it the 2nd largest producer after Kazakhstan.
This image shows a detail of the mine: a ‘tailings’ store of the radioactive waste sludge produced during the extraction of uranium from the uranium ore.
