Located at an altitude of 2,240 meters on the high Mexican central plateau, Mexico City and its suburbs have a population of over 22 million, making this the sixth-largest conurbation in the world.
Over-exploitation of aquifers, the growing size of the city and its location on an ancient lake bed have been causing the city to sink for many decades. It is currently sinking at a rate of around 50 centimeters a year. This also means that its water supplies are at risk.
