Rondônia,
Brazil
One of 26 Brazilian states, Rondônia was originally home to more than 200,000 km2 of rainforest, but has become one of the most deforested places in the Amazon.
In the last fifty years, the Amazon rainforest has lost about a fifth of its forest cover - almost 800,000 km2.
In 2021 more than 10,000 km2 of Amazon rainforest was lost. As a result, scientists calculate that the rainforest now emits more greenhouse gases than it absorbs overall.
